If you use a free banner exchange, you want to use one that allows you to target the categories of sites your banners will show up on. If you're not getting the traffic in the first place, to generate banner impressions and credits, then the banner exchange isn't going to bring you much benefit, unless you're getting amazing clickthroughs (the exception).
On the pro side, by having a banner showing, you will get free banner advertising at other sites, and some of these will generate visitors for you, who may then buy from amazon.

On the con-side, many of the banners you will be showing on your site are designed to take visitors away - i.e. instead of going to amazon, they click on the banner. You might argue that if they're that easily distracted, then they weren't going to buy anyway. But a lot of e-commerce sites refuse to show banners because they don't want anything to distract from the main purpose of being at the site - to buy something.  
A banner also adds to download times and removes some of the space on the page you might otherwise use for selling, both of which may reduce the usefulness of your site as a selling vehicle. Each site should weight up the pros and cons and then decide what's best for them.
Don't write off banner exchanges. Click-thru rates aren't the only thing in life that are important. "Branding" your site is very important too. Each banner that is shown is hopefully one more set of eyes who will see your brand name and perhaps remember it the next time they are looking for a product.
